BALLERINA'S
OTTOMAN

Clear
vertical grained hard maple was cut to design specifications. It was then
glued, double doweled, corner blocked and assembled.
3-inch
Elastic webbing was tacked to the top of the base in a basket weave pattern.
This allowed for a soft seat. A felt-filled edge-roll was attached to the edge
of the frame for comfort. Cotton batting was stuffed between the webbing weave
so that it would not make noise when it was sat upon. A layer of Ultracell
topped off the webbing.

Pin
core latex foam was secured over the Ultracell foam, left.
Blonde
cattle tail hair was secured to the top of the latex with a spray adhesive,
right.

A
layer of 50/50 cotton batting topped the hair, and a muslin top created the
final form, left. A
final layer of soft Dacron® was pulled around the muslin to provide a softer
waterfall edge, right.
Legs
were hand-stained with eight coats of varnish. The grooves were highlighted to
mimic an old finish. Once cured, the finish was rubbed out with fine steel wool
and paste wax; then buffed to an extraordinary sheen. Brass casters were
secured into the front legs with decorative screws.
Fabric
was upholstered, keeping in mind where the pattern must lay in relation to the
chair. The rayon bullion was added, and our ottoman is ready to go!
