MPF does not appraise items because it is a conflict of interest for anyone involved in the conservation or repair of items to also be the appraiser.   We can assist in authenticating an item, which is to say we may be able to tell our clients a great deal about their piece, but will not give the value.

For example, imagine that you bring someone a chair to conserve, restore, or repair, and it is decided that it will cost $4000.  You want to know if the chair is worth that to repair.  If the one who repairs the piece can also answer that, an unscrupulous person could easily tell you that it is worth $25,000, and so worth the amount to repair.

We cannot recommend appraisers as they should be specific to the items and to the area in which you live, but can give you some suggestions as to how to find a good appraiser.

Ask for references and check them.

Don’t trust an interior designer, architect, or anyone else who says they know – go for the real thing, and appraiser.

A first pass may include good digital photographs, but eventually they will need to see the piece to authenticate it, and then certify the value.

bullet

They should be willing to give you a certified appraisal, meaning they sign their good name to a document that states what they believe this is worth.

There are a few appraisal societies, and while they are not governed by licensing in the same way you may think of a professional (architect, doctor, lawyer) the organizations may have ways to recommend appraisers, and so this may be a starting place for some of you, and both list appraisers across the country.
